Christmas Dangers !! - Tuesday, 20 December 2016

HAZARDS TO YOUR PET AT CHRISTMAS TIME !!

During the festive season there are many foods and items that can pose a threat to your furry family members.  We all like to include our pets in our Christmas festivities but it is important to remember that the following foods can cause severe illness or even death if consumed by your pet.

·         Grapes and raisins, and foods containing them such as: fruit mince pies, Christmas
          pudding and Christmas cake.
·         Mushrooms
·         Cooked bones can splinter and become lodged in your pets mouth and throat, and if
          swallowed, could perforate internal organs
·         Fatty foods can upset your pets digestive system and possibly result in them suffering from
          Pancreatitis
·         Onions and garlic are both toxic to your pets
·         Peanuts and Macadamias
·         Chocolate is extremely toxic to your pets
·         Sugar. Our pets are unable to digest sugar like we can and large amounts can cause
          illness.
·         Stone fruit pips/seeds (nectarine, cherry, peach etc) these are toxic but also pose a
          choking hazard
·         Alcohol

Also remember that there are lots of beautiful decorations around that are new and exciting to your pet. Be cautious when using or buying products that contain artificial snow, as the chemicals in this are extremely dangerous for your pets. Christmas baubles and tinsel can be fun for your pets to play with but can quickly become a hazard for choking or entanglement.
This is a popular season for fireworks which can be very stressful and frightening for your animals. Always make sure that your property is adequately secured to prevent your pets escaping and becoming lost on the streets and if possible, allow them to be somewhere they feel extra safe (either inside with you, in a garage, or in their kennel where they can hide).

Don’t let this deter you from enjoying the Christmas holidays with your furry loved ones, just remember to be extra mindful to ensure that they don’t have to spend their Christmas at the vet.
